A branch of complementary medicine — natural, safe and effective.
Homeopathy sits alongside mainstream medicine, not against it. It's a natural, individualised system of treatment that looks at the whole person — not just the isolated symptom in front of you — using remedies chosen to work with the body's own healing response.
It's been practised for over two centuries and remains a registered, regulated healthcare profession in South Africa today.
A homeopath is a primary healthcare practitioner, licenced to diagnose medical conditions by performing diagnostic exams and sending for special investigations (blood tests, imaging techniques) when needed. Treatment uses homeopathic medicines, herbal tinctures, biopuncture and supplements, alongside advice on diet and lifestyle — aiming for cure rather than simply the amelioration of symptoms.
In South Africa, homeopaths must complete a Master's degree in homeopathy from either the University of Johannesburg (UJ) or the Durban University of Technology (DUT), and must be registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) in order to practice.
A homeopath holds the title of 'Dr' because they are trained as primary healthcare practitioners and diagnose identically to mainstream medicine. However, homeopaths do not perform invasive procedures and are not licensed to dispense chemical drugs or prescription medications — treatment stays within the natural, homeopathic scope of practice.
Homeopathy is covered by most medical aids, though what's covered depends on your specific plan. Origin Health Homeopathy does not contract to medical aid directly, but a detailed, coded invoice is provided which you can use to reclaim.
Homeopathy has been in continuous clinical use since the late 1700s.
A regulated primary healthcare profession in South Africa — not an informal practice.
Treatment considers physical, emotional and lifestyle factors together, not symptoms in isolation.
